Top Tips For Teaching Yoga In Schools - Tip #35: Spend Time In Your Space, Creating Your Space

Hi y’all, and welcome back!

I’m officially starting my last week of summer break this week, and am trying to enjoy these last few days of quiet and downtime before the school year starts again in full swing.

As many of you are also preparing to return to teaching in-person in schools in some form, I wanted to share this back to school tip to help ease the transition into (or back into) the classroom this fall.

Please enjoy, and feel free to leave a comment if you found this tip helpful!

Tip #35: Spend Time In Your Space, Creating Your Space

I set foot in my classroom for the first time since June last week, and while it was overwhelming, it was also really exciting! One of my favorite things to do is to spend time setting up and creating my classroom space each and every year, even though it can also feel incredibly exhausting and overwhelming.

So, this week’s tip is simple: spend time creating your classroom space before classes start, if you can. Even if it means you’re just walking through the school to see where you’ll be holding your classes, do it!

If it’s a new space, or if you’re not a full-time teacher in that school, take pictures of the space if you’re allowed, so that you can figure out the best configuration for your class before you start.

Ask whether you’re allowed to hang things on the walls, or dim the lights, or tape the floors. If you have access to your space, begin planning and purchasing supplies (if necessary) to create a warm and welcoming space for your students.

Create the space for your students that YOU would want to learn in. Something comfortable, bright, and inviting.

The more you plan ahead and familiarize yourself with the space you’re teaching in, the easier it will be to create an intentional space for your classes, and the more comfortable and engaged your students will be.

Tip Takeaway: Get into the space you’ll be teaching in before the start of your class sessions. Take notes, brainstorm ideas, and purchase any necessary supplies you might need to create a warm and inviting space for your students to learn! Trust me, it makes all the difference, for you and your students!
